Bloomberg , the news and business information service, is building a vast new European headquarters in London designed with Foster + Partners. Demolition and excavation began in 2011 and revealed the remains of the ancient Roman Temple of Mirthras. More fascinating still, archeologists working on the site found the earliest and largest collection of Roman waxed writing tablets in Britain and northern Europe . Numbering 400 in total, this significant collection includes the first hand-written document known from Britain and the earliest ever reference to London. The Bloomberg building itself features a sandstone façade, with 3,000 cubic metres of yellow stone, is the largest such project undertaken in the UK in the last 100 years. Bronze fins provide shade for the offices beyond. The scale of the project is huge - the atrium alone is made out of more steel than the Eiffel Tower and the 3.2 acre site includes public spaces, the Bloomberg Arcade filled with restaurants and a cultural hub for the restoration of the Temple of Mithras.
