The home of the Queen Mother from 1953 to 2002, a tour of Clarence House is an excellent way of experiencing the living history of the British Royal Family. Situated next to St James's Palace the stately building was originally constructed between 1825 and 1827, following a design submitted by John Nash. The first resident of the house was Prince William Henry, Duke of Clarence and heir of George IV who lived there as King until 1837. The Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, and The Duke of Edinburgh also lived in the property after their marriage in 1947. It is now the official London residence of The Prince of Wales, who first lived there from the ages of one and three years. Still an active part of Royal life and a lived-in home, Clarence House is only open to the public during the summer months. Visitors are taken on a guided tour of the five rooms and adjoining spaces on the ground floor.
Best for: British Royal Family living history, memories of the Queen Mother.
