Opening in 2012, the Hilton London Southbank is a purpose built height restricted hotel with a four-storey glass atrium, 281 rooms and fitness centre, complete with swimming pool. This is the closest five star hotel to the Tate Modern so visitors who are interested in art can enjoy the short stroll to the gallery - while easy access to Southwark underground station offers easy access to the tube network. This space, adjacent to the NEO Bankside development of luxury apartments, was originally going to be a dual purpose build under the Holiday Inn and Staybridge Suites brands. However the plans changed and the much larger Hilton Southbank hotel was the result with its 31 suites, executive lounge, plus a restaurant, bar and cafe and more than 1,000 square metres of meeting space. The building has been designed by Dexter Moren Architects and features a split level design with one half of the building lower than the other to give two adjoining forms, linked by a glazed entrance and inner lightwell. The facade combines brick, metal and glass with retail outlets located along the hotel's frontage at street level.
