Visitor Information
Magdala (formerly the Magdala Tavern) get its name from Sir Robert Napier, later Lord Napier of Magdala who fought alongside the Indian army against the Ethiopians in 1868. This historic Hampstead pub dates back to 1885, shortly after Napier had served as Governor of Gibraltar and the year before he became Constable of the Tower of London. This is famously where Ruth Ellis, the last woman hanged in England, shot her lover to death outside the pub on Easter Sunday in 1955. Some say there are still bullet holes visible from the unfortunate incident but we're not convinced. Luckily, things are less explosive in these parts today and the Magdala makes a lovely spot for a peaceful pint after a hike on the Heath.
