Following an 18-month closure which began in 2007, The Monument reopened in February 2009 revealing the effects of a ?4.5 million renovation. If you're feeling energetic one of the most rewarding forms of exercise on offer in the City of London is to climb the 311 spiral steps 202 feet up to the top of The Monument. An enclosed observation deck at the top permits a stunning view over London, taking in the River, the BT Tower, Tower Bridge, and the dome of St Paul's to name but a few. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and erected between 1671 and 1677 to mark the Great Fire of London in 1666, The Monument is the tallest freestanding stone column in the world. The significance of its 202 feet height is not simply that it makes your feet ache if you climb it, but it is also the distance to the bakery on Pudding Lane that was the suspected source of the fire that destroyed the city. It's definitely worth the climb, plus you get a certificate of completion if you make it to the top and back alive! Good luck! The Monument images
