A landmark triumphal arch set opposite the Duke of Wellington's residence at Apsley House, Wellington Arch was built in 1830 to commemorate the victories won by Britain in the Napoleonic wars. Though the arch remains, dominating Hyde Park Corner, sadly the unfeasibly huge equestrian figure of the 'Iron Duke' was removed from the top of the arch in 1882. The top is however adorned by an imposing bronze sculpture, the largest in Europe. The interior is open to the public, and a small exhibition celebrates the arch's history, from its time as the entrance to Buckingham Palace to a stint as London's smallest police station. There are excellent views of Hyde Park, one of the Royal Parks and a lovely green space, from the balcony.
