This cosy Italian-style café in the nice end of Fulham Broadway is one of LondonTown's new favourites. Located over the road from Del'Aziz, Al Santo has more charm than its illustrious neighbour - and, dare we say it, offers simpler (but way better) fare for far less money and less chaos. Granted, it will never boast the wondrous array of cakes and pastries as the Mediterranean monster opposite - but it makes up for this with a delicious delicatessen, genuinely friendly service and a delightfully cluttered interior. Essentially a café, Al Santo also offers a wonderful selection of fresh pasta dishes, fresh Greek and Italian salads and tasty paninis. It's worth multiple visits alone for its sumptuous caprese salad (juicy cherry tomatoes, creamy mozzarella and spicy rocket) and its generously laden wooden platters of mixed charcuterie, cheeses and grilled vegetables. All this is served with more than a smile from a family-run enterprise which will have you coming back again and again. The décor is comfy and accommodating, centred around a huge mahogany butchers table which looks like it weighs more than a baby elephant. There are a range of games to play and books to peruse if you're in for the long haul, while the rich coffees and juices are of the highest order. Snacks include savoury cheese and ham croissants (delicious) and traditional tramezzini sandwiches, while the bona fide Italian staff will always let you try some of the excellent cheeses on offer. Oh, and for those looking for a spot of brunch on the weekend - there's an Italian take on the full English breakfast which is well worth exploring. The welcome addition of Al Santo in SW6 is further proof that small, independently run establishments boast more character than anything a chain has to offer.
