Portuguese influenced food with an Indian/Goan twist is the flavour at Assado at 157 Waterloo Road, the latest restaurant from chef Cyrus Todiwala, one half of the duo featured in BBC TV series The Incredible Spice Men who is also behind celebrated Indian restaurant Cafe Spice Namaste. At Assado - a Portuguese word meaning 'roast' - Cyrus has developed a natural correlation between Portuguese, Goan and Brazilian cuisine, combined with that of his Indian homeland. The result is a menu of specials cooked on woks, wood-burning ovens, and the Kamado grill in the open plan kitchen as well as the signature dish of pulled pork Assado. Mains include traditional Goan style Pork Vindaloo, and Caldeen de Frango com Arroz, a milder curry developed in Goa for the Portuguese palate. Diners can eat in or get good quality food to go - the restaurant space includes a deli counter serving a wide choice of delicatessen specialities and meals for people to pick up and take away.
