First we had lobster, then we had hot dogs, now meatballs are getting their moment. Long associated with bad school dinners and visits to Ikea, the balls are getting a makeover with Balls & Company, set up by Australian chef and owner Bonny Porter to elevate the humble meatball from average to excellent. Don't be put off if meat (and balls of it) aren't your thing. The concise meatball menu offers 'Confit salmon' and a vegetarian option of 'Quinoa, beetroot and feta' as well as 'Wagyu beef', each served in portions of four. Diners can choose a sauce to accompany their balls, from the classic tomato sauce to romesco with red pepper, almonds, hazelnuts and garlic. Meat sliders, served as a trio in soft mini brioche buns, beef up the menu which offers seasonal sides like mac and cheese or fennel and fontina arancini. A short but sweet dessert menu lists 'Persian fairy floss topped brownie' and 'Choux balls' served with Purbeck ice-cream. Split across two floors, the ground floor (seating up to 30 guests) is exclusively for dining while downstairs - where there's a more edgy underground vibe - wine is served by the glass, carafe and bottle, there's craft beers, cocktails and sangria, and dining space for up to 20.
