Originally opened as a year-long pop-up, Shackfuyu by Bone Daddies, was given permanent status in December 2015, re-opening with a marble top bar and a menu of Japanese yoshoku cuisine served in Japan's izakayas. Ross Shonhan and head chef Ben Hughes have created playful takes on current food trends in Japan, with one regularly-changing main as the menu headline along with a number of sides and snacks. There's prawn toast masquerading as okonomiyaki (a form of Japanese savoury pancake), mentaiko mac and cheese with cock scratchings and Korean fried wings - a menu highlight at their sister restaurant Flesh and Buns whose steamed gua bao buns are replicated here at lunch - but served filled, rather than the DIY assembly experience, for speed. Fillings include fried chicken with kimchee, grilled salmon with orange miso, and crispy duck leg with plum soy. With counter seating for 12, a 16 seat sharing table, and an additional private dining area in the basement, Shackfuyu is here to stay, adding to the successes of Bone Daddies Peter Street and High Street Kensington branches.
