The modern Chiswick House Cafe, in the grounds of Chiswick House, Lord Burlington's 18th-century Palladian villa is a favourite with West London families. After taking a stroll around the extensive grounds, circumnavigating the lake, or visiting the house, you can retire to the cafe and enjoy delicious sandwiches, soups, sizeable main courses, tea, Union Coffee and cake, all prepared by the Company of Cooks. The cafe building doesn't try to blend in with the main house but instead is a modern masterpiece. Designed by Caruso St John, it was named RIBA London Building of the Year 2011 and won the English Heritage Award for Sustaining the Historic Environment. There's seating for up to 80 people in the cafe with room for around the same again at outside tables which overlook the playground - perfect for parents who want to have their cake and eat it. There's enough on the menu to indulge in a three course meal if you're feeling that way inclined. The seasonally changing menu might include hot smoked salmon beetroot & horseradish salad, butternut squash and parmesan tart, with blackberry apple crumble tart for pudding. Open daily from 9am until 5pm in summer or until dusk in winter, this really is a wonderful place to explore. It has everything from the historic main house to the modern cafe, plenty of green space, beautifully manicured gardens, and a stunning conservatory, no wonder Time Out Magazine has chosen Chiswick House Cafe as one of London's top park cafes.
