Chicken kievs, black forest trifle and soda stream cocktails are the order of the day at Coin Laundry , an unashamedly retro British restaurant. If you thought the seventies were a decade without culinary merit, Coin Laundry will make you think again. With a menu by head chef Nik Prescot, old-school British comfort food is served in laid back surroundings from morning to late night with vintage pinball machines and board games in the basement thrown in for fun. Mornings bring everything from dirty baps, banana pancakes and strawberry porridge to more unusual options like onion bhaji with fried egg, green eggs on toast, and corned beef and Bovril hash. The all-day menu, meanwhile, features dishes your mum might have made as a treat. Prawn cocktail, Barnsley lamb chops, summer pudding and trifle are the retro dinner party favourites brought back to life in contemporary form. The cocktail list features modern takes on retro classics like the Grasshopper and the Snowball and a sodastream puts the bubbles in the cocktails and fizzy drinks. Prudence Randall, general manager of Urban Leisure Group which is behind the venture, says the food is "unapologetically rich and delicious... it's the kind of stuff you'd make at home for yourself as a treat and not tell anyone about because you'd be embarrassed. And it's really, really good."
