Donostia, named after the Basque word for San Sebastian, is the first restaurant from the wine merchant Mountain Valley Wines, a company set up by Nemanja Borjanovic and his partner Melody Adams which began in 2004 importing Montenegrin wines. They have entrusted ex- Barrafina chef Tomas Baranski, with running the kitchen at their 40-seater restaurant on Seymour Place near Marble Arch to offer a food and drinks menu inspired by the Basque region. On the menu is a selection of charcuterie, cold plates of saucisson and chorizo, Pintxo appetisers and tapas - divided into fish, meat, and vegetable and salad sections. The traditional Basque dish of pil-pil - cod cheeks in the 'legendary' Basque sauce - is something of a speciality and comes highly recommended. Everything is influenced by the Basque region - from the pigeon served with with fresh peas and pancetta to the pork fillet in romesco sauce. This influence is also felt in the drinks menu with wines from Spain and France but with a strong emphasis on the Basque wine regions such as Rioja Alavesa and Getaria (Txakoli), as well as Basque cider from the famous sagardotegias (cider houses) nestled in the hills around San Sebastian.
