Dapper looking Danish-born restaurateur Soren Jessen, who launched successful City stalwart 1 Lombard Street in 1998, gives us a more casual alternative at this glass-fronted 60 seat restaurant in Bloomberg Arcade. Instead of the grandeur of the former banking hall, EKTE Nordic Kitchen sits in the avenue of new-build restaurants under Bloomberg. City workers start with breakfast and Danish pastries, charcuterie and gravad lax and eggs. A busy lunch sitting brings a chef's selection of herring done three ways and a surprisingly good sliced potato on rye bread. This, at first, unassuming dish is packed with surprises thanks to the smoked mayonnaise, capers and fried onions. If you've eaten all that there's really no need for a main but we tried the deep fried plaice fillet with potatoes and spinach and discovered a hearty dish, cooked to perfection. Interiors match the simplicity of the Nordic menu, making use of weathered oak, tanned leather, polished concrete, charred timber and pale stone. Oh and there's a reindeer called 'Sven' overlooking the whole thing. Get a seat at the long bar overlooking the kitchen and you'll have a close-up view of the chefs at work or, in the summer, opt for a table at the outdoor seating area for up to 20 - the best seats for watching the world go by in warmer weather.
