- Visitor Information
Between Fitzrovia and Soho, on Rathbone Place, East Street restaurant is the latest venture and seventh eaterie from Nick Jeffrey and David Fox, the restaurateurs behind the Asian chain Tampopo. Taking inspiration from their travels - Jeffrey and Fox both backpacked extensively through East Asia and fell in love with the food and culture - East Street combines the looks of a Bangkok backpacker pit stop with the tastes of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and Korea. The food is healthy, high-quality and good value for money, the service quick, and the seating canteen style. Choose from starter dishes of tempura vegetables, goi cuon (rice paper rolls), coconut prawns, corn fritters and kimchi served with the Bulgogi - highly recommended if you like marinaded grilled beef. Mains come in the shape of a beef panang curry with steamed jasmine rice, substantial soup noodles and pad Thai. To finish with something sweet there's sticky rice pudding and (backpacker favourite) fried bananas to choose from. Wash down with a Tiger beer or a cocktail, served in a bucket with straws, while surveying the scene: neon adverts overhead, travel info pasted the corrugated iron walls and you can almost believe you're back on your gap year, Lonely Planet supplied.
