An all-day cafe on Clapham Common located next to the skate park on Rookery Road SW4, Fields is the brainchild of Julian Porter, who at the age of just 21 opened M1LK in Balham with his partner Lauren Johns. Three years on, Fields becomes a big sister to M1LK, a 30-cover cafe with a heated terrace area for a further 80 people which also has its own herb roof garden. Coffee is a specialty. Paying homage to Julian's Australian cafe culture upbringing (his mother owns a group of popular cafes in Melbourne), Fields serves specialty coffee from Workshop Coffee Co. and Koppi of Sweden. The menu is made up of coal-grilled sausage bao, kewpie, pickled shallot and iceberg, and peat-smoked mutton with beans, garden herb butter and sourdough, cooked on the cafe's in-house on-site smoker, using earthy elements of hay, peat and leaves during cooking. Sweet options include sticky rice pudding, apple, soured cream ice-cream and sake, and banana bread, Nesquik mascarpone and salted panela. Provenance and quality are very much at the heart of the menu, with emphasis on local produce and suppliers.
