Proving that curry need not go hand in hand with beer as enemies of the gut, the Indali Lounge on Baker Street has topped the Channel 4 Food's UK Healthy Restaurant list for 2010. Owned by Dr Kartar Lalvani (India's answer to Heston Blumenthal), Indali doesn't use butter, cream or ghee in its cooking, while the naans are made with flour, oats and barley to maximise fibre and minimise starch, and the only oils used are sunflower and olive - both sparsely. This is a start, sophisticated curry house with a modern edge and a unique philosophy. The food is cooked slowly and gently to retain its freshness and flavour (making for extremely tender mouthfuls) while no artificial colouring is used (so bright orange chicken tikka is off limits). Downsides: the portions are not huge and sometimes the choice of overhead music can be a bit clubby. There's a separate bar area with a contemporary feel and an extensive wine and cocktail list. A new buffet lunch is available during the week 12pm-3pm for ?8.90.Indali Lounge images
