Brothers Ed and Tom Martin, the duo behind well loved London gastropubs The Gun, The Botanist, and The Angel & Crown in Covent Garden opened their tenth London pub, The Jugged Hare, in Chiswell Street, a stone's throw from their Chiswell Street Dining Rooms. Situated next to the Barbican Centre, on the corner of Chiswell and Silk streets in the City of London, the pub forms part of the famous old Grade II listed building and former home of the Whitbread Brewery from 1750. The pub takes its name from an 18th century recipe (which features on the menu throughout the game season).
This British gastro pub with open kitchen, dining room and flexible private events space called The Josephine Room, has Head Chef Stephen Englefield at the helm. Customers can watch the kitchen team prepare and serve their food from a state-of-the art eight-spit rotisserie as well as a charcoal grill. Seasonal game, meat and wild fish and shellfish are roasted and grilled on a daily basis and Sunday roasts are a most welcome addition to the area. Hearty feast menus, available for larger groups, include whole roast suckling pigs, whole legs of spring lamb and haunch of venison amongst many others.
The Grade II listed property includes exposed ceramic tiles on the vaulted ceilings and walls and oak timber floorboards throughout. The main focal point of the bar is a back bar display of antique and exclusively British cased taxidermy all carefully selected and positioned by the owners Ed and Tom. Other pub features include the original brass ironmongery from the old Whitbread brewery, anaglypta wallpapered high ceilings and antique whisky barrel high tables in the pub. The spacious dining room features vibrant red leather booths, bar stools that allow diners to sit at the kitchen pass and light fittings from Tom Dixon. A ?walk-in? wine room enables guests to handpick their favourite bottle of red whilst a window through to the kitchen?s ?cold room? showcasing the aging process of meat or hanging game.
