First came their Meatwagon and Meateasy pop-ups and then came their first permanent residence MEATliquor back in 2012. Now, five restaurants later, Scott Collins and Yianni Papoutsis are opening a MEATliquor in Islington. Housed in the abandoned Citroen garage that previously played host to Pipsdish, the deliciously seedy burger joint is not for the faint hearted with a menu of juicy burgers and cheesy fries. Mixing classic American fares with quirky modern concoctions, options include burgers with a side of deep fried pickles and chilli cheese fries, as well as 'dirty' fried chicken and kurrywurst. The look by Shed is a lesson in industrial design with neon signs - from an arrow to direct you in to a 'C' next to an upside down M to guide you to the loos. The garage's mechanical past is felt in the MEAT stamped Citroen sign and a canopy of garage trusses over the main dining spaces, split over two levels. Diners sitting at rows of reclaimed timber tables can be seen on CCTV screens giving the place an air of surveillance - a nod to former local resident George Orwell and his novel 1984. The 'liquor' part is served from the bar, towering above, where draft beer is fed by four stainless steel tanks.
