Born in Verona, chef Andrea Mantovani brings his own style of Italian trattoria to Mele e Pere on Soho's Brewer Street. Having honed his cooking skills working with Anthony Demetre at Arbutus, Wild Honey and Les Deux Salons for five years, Mantovani has partnered with Peter Hughes and set up his own restaurant. Offering a mix of traditional and modern regional Italian cooking, the menu includes charcoal-grilled shoulder of lamb, roast cod with fennel and orecchiette - a homemade pasta typical of Puglia or Apulia, in Southern Italy - with broccoli and baby squid alongside more adventurous dishes like snails with pecorino (Italian cheese made from sheep's milk). Finish with 'Nonna's' apple cake or warm zabaglione - Italian custard - served with lingue di gatto biscuits. The street level entrance to the lower level 92-seat restaurant features a window full of hundreds of brightly coloured Murano glass apples and pears, and the overall mood is fun and informal with a mix of vintage tables and chairs, and hand-picked treasures from Italy. A large selection of vermouth-based cocktails on display add to the (mostly Italian) wine on offer.
