Nordic Bakery is a magnet for London's expanding Nordic population who come from all over town to get a taste of a home and following the success of the Golden Square branch, a new venue in Marylebone has opened. If you've never set foot in a Helsinki café this is a good place to put that right. You'll soon realise that the Finns' love of clean lines, quiet efficiency and simple ingredients make for a superior café experience. Super strength coffee, Swedish rye crispbreads, salmiakki (salty liquorice), Finnish Karelian (flat, savoury pastries) with rice and milk topping eaten with a smear of 'egg butter' are all specialities. For lunch top your open sandwich with classic Scandinavian and Finnish fare - salmon tartare, gravadlax with sweet mustard, sliced boiled egg topped with anchovies, or honey-roast ham. Breads include vaasan ruispalat (ryebread) imported from Finland, wheat-free rye or sourdough. If you prefer yours sweet, there are plenty of traditional pastries and sponge cakes to choose from but in our opinion the main attraction are the HUGE Finnish cinnamon rolls (for a very reasonable £1.50); sweet, spicy and very addictive.
