Proper East End fish and chip shop Poppies, a place synonymous with its owner 74-year-old Pat 'Pop' Newland, who the shop is named after, is bringing its famous fish and chips, delivered daily from Billingsgate, to Old Compton Street in Soho. "Although I'm an East End lad," says Pat, "Soho has always been an interesting and iconic part of London. I had a jellied eel stall on Rupert Street outside what was then the Rehearsal Rooms for a year in the '60s." Already an institution in Spitalfields, Poppies Old Compton Street brings a dash of East End charm and a bit of 70s retro chic to Soho. As well as fresh fish and hand cut chips there's live music and a stage in the Soho shop, like the Poppies in Camden, with music and dancing - just as there should be on the site of the old 2i's Coffee Bar, the birthplace of rock 'n' roll. Fish 'n' chips and rock 'n' roll.
