Located in Camden's Stables Market more or less underneath Gilgamesh and opened at vast cost after three years in the making, Shaka Zulu falls under the rare category of high-end African concept bar and restaurant. It's named after the great African warrior king, it cost a staggering £5.5 million (but still missed a trick by opening after the World Cup) and its two floors are filled with Zulu trinkets and "antiques". But the overriding impression is one of Africa-lite - right from the shopping centre-style escalator that splits the restaurant to the myriad tribal masks and carved statues dotted around the place, and the rather expensive menu and drinks list. As well as the King's Club members' area and a Lounge Bar, there are two restaurants to choose from: a Seafood and Oyster Bar and a South African Braai (grill) which serves the kind of exotic meats you'd expect to see in a safari park - we're talking kudu, ostrich and springbok - as well as more prosaic cuts of beef and lamb from the Sandringham Estate. Shaka Zulu has been heralded (by LBC's Nick Ferrari no less) as "the biggest restaurant and club of its kind in Europe" - but given its odd nature, it's probably the only establishment of its kind. Car crash celebrity Amy Winehouse reportedly made a scene at the place's opening after she fell asleep during a speech given by Goodwill Zwelithini, the current King of the Zulus.
