Chinese hot pot, a generous pot of simmering stock, traditionally sunk into the table, is the dish of the day at Shuang Shuang, Fah Sundravorakul's Chinatown restaurant. With five different broths to choose from, diners are seated at their own individual simmering stockpot and can choose which ingredients to add from a passing conveyor belt to cook for themselves. These ingredients may include bowls of thinly sliced free-range British beef and pork, clams, sea bass or secret recipe beef and chicken balls. Any combination is possible and there are recipe cards for hot pot novices. For sweet treats, soy milk curd topped with lychee granita, whipped cream and mango coolie, and deep fried Chinese dough sticks with condensed milk and crushed nuts are among the options. Split over two floors of an old Victorian building on the corner of Shaftesbury Avenue and Wardour Street, the informal ground floor dining room is reminiscent of how hot pot is served on the everyday tables of China and Asia with lattice walls and Fah's collection of porcelains and memorabilia from China.
