Named after a steam train, to reflect its position next door to Gipsy Hill station, The Great Southern Pub and Kitchen comes with a sun-drenched beer garden, flowing fizz on tap, cocktails and decent pub grub. Eat in The Dining Car restaurant and you'll feel like you're in a train carriage. Interiors also give a nod to its station location with vintage bric-a-brac from old suitcases to train station signs dotted around the place. Note too the boxing memorabilia from the 1920s and 30s when the pub hosted underground fights while photographs show old and current day Gipsy Hill. The large 60-cover, south-facing beer garden is an additional perk, overseen by a striking mural, it's perfect for getting the gang together for a few pints in the sun. Food is of the hearty, honest pub grub variety. Beef and ale pie, beef burger, pizzas with interesting toppings - sausage, smoked cheddar, mushroom and truffle oil - as well as vegan beetroot and quinoa burger are among the mains. Live music on Fridays and Saturdays, bottomless Frizzante and live jazz on Sundays and quiz nights on Mondays are typical of the special events they run.
