This Fitzrovia restaurant gets its name from the number of restaurants chef Jun Tanaka - who has spent a decade under the tutelage of Michel Roux Jnr, Marco Pierre White and Eric Chavot - has worked in during his successful career. But The Ninth is his first solo venture. Spread over two floors, this neighbourhood restaurant has a simple yet refined French-Mediterranean sharing menu and an approachable vibe. The a la carte menu, divided into eight sections - snacks, hot starters, salads, raw and cured, meat, fish, vegetables and desserts - makes vegetables more star-billing than supporting act. Options of smoked aubergine caviar with pickled red onion, Jerusalem artichokes a la barigoule and toasted Fregola and butternut squash risotto with pumpkin seeds will please the most particular vegetarian. More meaty options include Barbajuans, oxtail croquettes, and rabbit lasagne with smoked bacon. Classics desserts like pain perdu with honeycomb, and tarte tatin with rosemary ice cream can be savoured in the green and terracotta leather banquettes lining the exposed brick walls. Don't worry if you haven't booked, there's a small stylish ground floor bar, all slate green tiles and copper, reserved for walk-ins.
