Cutty Sark TavernOverlooking the Thames, the Cutty Sark Tavern has been quenching the thirst of seafaring folk for hundreds of years when this stretch of the river was a busy commercial hub filled with the constant hustle and bustle of ships. Early records show that there has been a tavern on Ballast Quay since at least 1743. But the current building was built in the reign of George III and dates back to around 1810 when it was named 'the Union Tavern' - a mark of the patriotic fervour following the union of England and Ireland by an Act of Parliament in 1801. The tavern adopted its current name in the 1950s following the arrival of the famous tea clipper in Greenwich, which is a must-see if you're in the area. It's a traditional tavern with steak and ale pie, barrels as chairs and a good selection of wines and beers. But the best bit is the fabulous location on the river with views of Canary Wharf.
