A Young's pub on the corner of Kew Road and Shaftesbury Road, The Shaftesbury is a comfortable place to while away the afternoon in Richmond with surprisingly good food to entice you in. A three month closure and substantial refurbishment revealed a new-look pub on 2 May 2012 with sticky carpeted drinking den replaced by a stylish gastropub complete with its own motto: Love, Serve - taken from the family motto of the 1st Earl of Shaftesbury. There is a focus on food with fresh, seasonal, British produce featuring on a menu which includes dry-aged steaks cooked over real charcoal, sustainably sourced line-caught fish and daily changing specials. For the traditionalists there are some pub classics, excellent beers (try Sambrook's Wandle, the first beer brewed by Sambrook's Brewery in Battersea) and a Sunday roast to remind us all of where we are. The Shaftesbury Mess (to share) comes highly recommended - 'like the Eton version but slightly tidier'; a DIY dessert where you do the messing yourself.
