Renowned as one of the best universities for fine art in Britain, Goldsmiths has an excellent reputation; well known past students include artists Lucian Freud, Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Sam Taylor-Wood and Bridget Riley. The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths set up its Technical and Recreative Institute in 1891 to provide educational opportunities for the people of New Cross. It has been part of The University of London as Goldsmiths College since 1904.
