As a fitting accolade for the woman who helped set up Somerville College, the first women's college at Oxford, the Mary Ward Centre is an Adult Education College originally founded to give social and educational opportunities to those who had been denied them. That sentiment continues today with partnerships within the local community aimed at encouraging those who have been traditionally excluded from mainstream education. Courses on offer include English, computing, life skills, community interpreting, health and fitness and crèche worker training as well as evening classes. There's a wide selection of late night courses with a particular emphasis on new age, self-empowerment and humanities subjects. In addition, the Mary Ward Legal Centre is around the corner from the main Queen Square site at numbers 26 and 27 Boswell Street, WC1N 3JZ. Back at the main Mary Ward Centre Georgian building you'll find their excellent value vegetarian cafe and art gallery which provides a popular meeting place for students and is worth seeking out even if you're not a student.Mary Ward Centre images
