Intimate, underground jazz venue for real music lovers.
Hidden away in a basement, accessible only via an understated tradesmen-style doorway (look out for a red-brick archway), the 606 club is a haven for true music lovers and a jazz club in the true, traditional sense. A no-nonsense, low-key vibe and relaxed, intimate atmosphere belie the fact that the music on offer here really is top notch. Ranging from jazz to Latin, gospel to soul all of the performers here are UK-based and accomplished professionals, while a dynamic music programme means that the offerings never appear staid. The venue doesn’t have a stage – musicians perform directly in front of the audience on the same level as them. This clever removal of boundaries and divisions results in an amazing atmosphere and rapport between musicians and spectators – it’s not unusual to see audience members (themselves professional musicians) stand up and start jamming with the evening’s act. If you want to drink (and let’s face it, in a jazz club this is almost compulsory) you have to eat as well, but this is no great hardship. The food here is tasty and the table is yours for the whole night so you can eat, drink and enjoy the entertainment for as long as the evening lasts. The low-ceilinged space, coupled with a small-ish, 160-seat capacity, work together to support the friendly, family feel the organisers are so keen to promote. Look out for the quirky “Gospel Brunches”. This is pure gold for real music lovers.
Best for:
Underground jazz, gospel, Latin and soul, low-ceilinged intimacy and musical excellence.
