100 people in a room, all armed with a large African drum, banging in unison, until reaching a deafening crescendo - that's the premise of Drum Cafe. Every fortnight Glaziers Hall transforms itself from stilted conference centre into primal whirlwind of rhythm and flailing arms.
The Drum Cafe franchise started off with a cafe back in Johannesburg, but achieved international fame through an inspired programme of corporate workshops and events. This now global empire has hosted events in 28 countries and even a stage show in New York.
The sessions are lead by a dozen brilliant drummers on stage - all with their own style. It's simple - they play rhythms, you copy. Once you're warmed up the crowd split into sections thumping complimentary beats. Don't worry, you don't need much musical sense - it's all much easier than it seems, plus in amongst the din you can get away with plenty of stray beats.
And what fantastic fun it is too. The huge success of their corporate events has helped free bongo banging of its 'bloody hippy' tag. Now we all have the chance to get involved. Drum Café is different, fun and damn right euphoric once you get into the groove.
'Unite, uplift, inspire' says their slogan - we agree.
