Most Londoners have a feeling of nostalgia when they see The Hippodrome, a famous and historic Grade II listed building adjacent to Leicester Square. What was once an impressive theatre by renowned Victorian theatre architect Frank Matcham, first opened in 1900, it struggled to find a role for itself in recent years (having spent the 80s and 90s as a famously awful nightclub). Now the grand building is to become a 24-hour casino with gaming areas, restaurants, bars and cabaret following a 30 million pound refurbishment - slightly more than the 250,000 pounds spent on the original build. From 2 July 2012, Live at the Hippodrome will present a series of events from week-long residencies to big name singers, covering all genres from cabaret and burlesque to jazz and live music in the Matcham Room, a 182-seat performance space run by creative director Nick Frankfort and associate programmer Neil Marcus. Tony Christie, Janie Dee and Miss Polly Rae will be among the first acts to perform. Aside from the main auditorium there are three floors of gambling, four bars, a 200-seat theatre and a 150-cover restaurant. You can even get married here - by Elvis... the new Hippodrome is that kind of place.
