Tate Modern architects Herzog & de Meuron went for a shimmering, plastic-clad building when tasked with designing the Laban building, a place where excellence in contemporary dance is both nurtured and displayed. The stunning building with its semi-transparent walls and translucent glow, awarded the 2003 Stirling Prize, lends itself perfectly to the creative processes and performances that take place within. The move to this stunning purpose-built space in 2002 created the largest contemporary dance school in Europe. Included are 12 dance studios, a 294-seat theatre and outdoor amphitheatre which are all put to multiple uses - there's an excellent programme of dance and theatre performances; degree level courses in choreography and dance; fitness, pilates, yoga and dance classes open to all; and physiotherapy, osteopathy and massage therapies. Graduates of Laban include Matthew Bourne. In 2005, Laban merged with Trinity College of Music bringing music and dance under one well designed roof.Laban images
