- Visitor Information
The Cottesloe Theatre closed on 23rd February 2013 and will reopen as the Dorfman Theatre in 2014. In the meantime, during the Cottesloe's closure, a temporary performance space called The Shed has been set up at the front of the South Bank building.
The Cottesloe Theatre was the black box studio space of the National Theatre. It was also the smallest, the simplest and the most flexible - and many people would argue that it was also the most influential. The dark, rectangular room held up to 300 people. Some of the most notable productions held at the Cottesloe included Old Movies by Bill Bryden and Joanna Murray-Smith's Honour. More recently, it was where Lucy Prebble's The Effect, starring Billie Piper and directed by Rupert Goold, was staged, and the sell-out production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time transferred from here to the Apollo Theatre in the West End.
