The Renoir Cinema has now reopened as the Curzon Bloomsbury.
Almost invisible in the ridiculous 1960s sci-fi architecture of the Brunswick Centre, the two-screen arthouse Renoir Cinema is a firm favourite with London's film buffs. It opened as the Bloomsbury Cinema in January 1972 with The Trojan Women starring Katharine Hepburn and Vanessa Redgrave. After a few rocky years and several different owners the cinema re-opened in 1986 with Vagabond and No Surrender. As its current name suggests, the speciality now is French cinema, with an immmense variety of independent, low budget and international works thrown in for good measure.
