In 1905, Clara Ludski decided that the new "electric pictures" were the wave of the future, hired an architect, and had her auctioneers' workshop converted into a 175-seat cinema. Thus the Kingsland Empire (later the Rio Cinema) was born. Expanded and rebuilt in 1937, the Rio's interior is a triumph of cinema design, with extravagant Art Deco curves housing a grand auditorium, with great sound and excellent lines of sight. Since 1995, it's been run by a board of representatives from the local community, elected each year. This means it has one of the most varied programs in London, with regular seasons of Kurdish and Turkish films, and a scope that goes far wider than the usual Hollywood blockbusters.Rio Cinema events
