The Rose Theatre was built in 1587 but was only discovered in 1989 during excavations for new office buildings. Two-thirds of the original site were discovered, and the public formed a campaign to 'Save the Rose' and protect it from redevelopment. The Rose was the first of four playhouses to be built at Bankside. Shakespeare's company, which was based at the nearby Globe Theatre also played here. During the summer months Shakespeare's Globe brings tours to the Rose every day except Monday, and the tours encompass both the Globe Exhibition and the site of the Rose. Fundraising to fully excavate the site is still ongoing, and in the meantime, visitors can explore a light and sound exhibition, with a video narrated by Sir Ian Mckellan. There is also large scale model of the Rose Theatre as it might have been in 1587.
