National TheatreEach year the three superb venues in the National Theatre put on a significant proportion of the world's best productions. From intimate character studies in the Cottesloe (currently closed for refurbishment), to grand spectacles in the Olivier, the National Theatre is the spiritual centre of the British theatrical tradition. Free music in the foyer, experimental outdoor performances on the roof and terraces, and remarkable (if controversial) architecture complete the picture of the greatest theatre in the world. In February 2013 the Cottesloe Theatre closed for a major refurbishment and will reopen as the Dorfman Theatre in 2014. During its closure, the National Theatre will stage performances in temporary venue, The Shed. The distinctive red wooden box, designed by architects Haworth Tompkins who are also responsible for the refurbishment of the Cottesloe, will hold 225 seats and will be a celebration of new theatre.
