Tudor manor house in the East End.
The royal connections of this rare, red-brick Tudor manor house reach back to Henry VIII whose Principal Secretary of State, Sir Rafe Sadleir, owned the property. An emerging light at court, many momentous decisions relating to the monarchy and its progression were, no doubt, forged within its oak-panelled rooms. Built in 1535, it is now the oldest residential property to be found in the east of the city and, despite subsequent alterations to the exterior – namely a Georgian frontage – and interior, the house still boasts original carved fireplaces and some rare wall paintings from the Jacobean era. Now functioning as an arts and education centre for East London, National Trust owned Sutton House regularly hosts exhibitions and multi-media presentations. It’s rare enough to find a Tudor building in London, let alone one with such historic associations in the middle of the East End. An unexpected gem.
Best for:
Tudor politics, paintings and panelling.
Also known as:
Bryck Place
