Since it was set up in January 2009 The Cock Tavern Theatre above The Old Cock pub in Kilburn has been staging an impressive programme of fringe theatre productions. Under the artistic leadership of Adam Spreadbury-Maher, The Cock has earned several awards including a Time Out Critics Choice, and the Empty Space... Peter Brook Awards' Dan Crawford Pub Theatre Award. Its primary focus is on new writing in the English language (including translations) from anywhere in the world, new musicals, and timely and carefully selected revivals. Their record breaking six-month run of La Boheme by resident company OperaUpClose, for example, gave classic opera a contemporary twist with audiences following the players from the intimate 60-seat theatre upstairs into the pub below.
