The famous Mahogany Bar at Wilton's Music Hall has reopened after more than 50 years on the sidelines. Sadly, last orders were called at the bar in 1880, but back in the days when the British navy ruled the world, the Mahogany Bar was renowned in every major sea port in the world - to the extent that the revered public house near Wapping was said to have been better known on the water fronts of San Francisco than St Paul's Cathedral. Formerly know as The Albion Saloon and The Prince of Denmark in the 18th century, its legendary status came when it was fitted out with a splendid mahogany bar and fittings in 1828. Those fittings may not remain, but The Mahogany Bar retains its charged Victorian atmosphere: like the magnificent music hall to which it is attached, this is one of those hidden treasures that make London such a delight. To mark the 150th anniversary at Wilton's, The Mahogany Bar will run an eclectic programme of one-off events, including cinema screenings, live bands and shows - check www.wiltons.org.uk for details.
