- Visitor Information
First performances in The Sam Wanamaker Theatre are due to begin in January 2014.
For the first time since it opened in 1997, Shakespeare's Globe will be able to present plays throughout the year at The Sam Wanamaker Theatre, an indoor theatre specially created for the staging of Jacobean plays. The Allies and Morrison designed theatre will seat 340 people with two tiers of galleried seating, a pit seating area and will be predominantly lit by candles. The theatre has been designed through careful research to recreate the kind of Jacobean venue where Shakespeare or any of his contemporaries would have felt at home. The building, which used to house education activities moved in 2010 to the nearby Sackler Studios, has been named The Sam Wanamaker Theatre after the man who famously founded Shakespeare's Globe back in 1997.
