Based in the East End, The Showroom is part of a community of galleries that includes The Approach, Chisenhale, Interim Art, Matt’s gallery and Modern Art. The Showroom has existed as a publicly funded contemporary art gallery since 1989. Originally, its signature aspect was to offer of an artist their first solo show in London, now it focuses only on commissioning individual artists to make new work for the space. The annual programme consists of four solo shows of new work by emergent artists who are ready to make the transition from grassroots innovation to a more established context. Uniquely, the gallery supports all aspects of the commissioning process: artistically, financially and administratively. It's a practice that seems to work as many artists who started out here have gone on to become well known names including Mona Hatoum, Sam Taylor-Wood, Simon Starling, Jim Lambie, Claire Barclay and Eva Rothschild.
