It's easy to spot who's at the White Bear for the pints and who's there for the Pinter but somehow the two aspects unite comfortably under one roof. While the pub is a genuine local, complete with TV screens and no frills food, the regulars happily co-exist with the theatre-going visitors traipsing upstairs. Since 1988 the White Bear Theatre has been bringing people to the small room above this South London boozer. It has received numerous awards including Time Out Best Fringe Venue, Peter Brook Empty Space Award for Best Up and Coming Venue, and the Carling London Fringe Awards for Best Actor and Best Production. Some of their highly regarded theatrical shows have transferred to the West End. Precisely because of its small scale - it has around 40 seats - the audience get to experience the drama all the more intensely. During a particularly energetic battle scene, for example, you?ll be close enough to can see every bead of sweat. As you would expect, the productions vary wildly in quality, but prices are reasonable, and when it's good, the sheer intimacy means that it's very good indeed.
