The multi-functional bookshop was opened in a tight South London community by local residents, who already harboured a special non-for-profit company 'Living Imprint'. This company has shaped the efforts of the bookshop, as being a store which also will host exhibitions, creative workshops, events and have a cafe. Bermondsey Square has the first new bookshop in SE1 since the closure of another in Waterloo, it is now one of two independent stores in the area. The founders Shivaun Woolfson and Frances Tay launched their first exhibition a few days after the shop opened in September, Truth & Lies which was a selection of Jillian Edelstein's photography from four years on the road with South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. A perfect addition to an already booming square of chain stores, the bookshop is a refreshing change from another chain and its individuality is what will give it the edge and prevent an early demise like so many others.
