York Hall Leisure Centre in Bethnal Green includes a gym, day spa, 33-metre swimming pool, Turkish bath and offers a wide range of exercise classes but it is best known as a boxing arena, where future champions such as Lennox Lewis and Audley Harrison learned their craft. The magnificent Georgian building, opened in 1929 by the Duke of York, has played host to some of the world's greatest boxers with fights taking place in the grand main hall. With a capacity of 1,200, the hall also makes a good venue for private parties. Plenty of original 1920s features remain from the domed glass roof to the wrought iron staircases and chandeliers as well as many other attractive and unique characteristics from the time. York Hall underwent a major multi-million pound refurbishment in 2005 a year after being threatened with closure.York Hall Leisure Centre images
