The first hospital in the world to provide in-patient beds for sick children, Great Ormond Street is still going strong after more than 150 years. What started out as 10 beds in a converted 17th century townhouse on the corner of Powis Place in 1852, is now the largest centre for research into childhood illness outside the United States. After initial skepticism and low patient turnout the hospital's services were promoted by principal founder Charles West's friend the novelist Charles Dickens who wrote in praise of the hospital when it opened in his popular magazine Household Words. Another famous supporter and author was J. M. Barrie who gave the rights to Peter Pan to the hospital after his death - a major source of revenue, since every new production of the play, or film version has to pay royalties to the hospital. The hospital also contains a museum which can be visited by appointment, and a small gallery devoted to Peter Pan.
