Singapore's most famous hotel gets a London outpost when the Raffles Hotel transforms the Old War Office building in Whitehall into a luxury hotel and deluxe residences. Steeped in history, the name conjures up the colonial past and cocktails - the Singapore Sling was created at the hotel. In London, the hotel takes the Grade II* listed Old War Office and turns just some of its 1,100 rooms and two miles of corridors into 125 rooms. Other amenities include restaurants, a 25 metre swimming pool and ballroom in the basement . Close to 10 Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, the Old War Office was once the workplace of Sir Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George and the British Secret Service who had their own, more discreet entrance. The £460 million hotel conversion project doubles the number of floors from seven to 14 and includes 88 private residences .
