The scent of jasmine hangs in the air at The Mandrake, a 34-room independent boutique hotel set around central courtyard surrounded by hanging gardens. Set up by entrepreneur Rami Fustok, a Londoner born in Beirut and the son of sculptor Bushra Fakhoury, the hotel has been inspired by the medicinal properties of the Mandrake plant. Design touches have a slightly narcotic bent, hinting at the aphrodisiac. This is bourne out in the priceless art collection which includes works by Francesco Clemente, Jonas Burgert and Peter-John de Villiers among others, soundscapes come from French sound engineer Pierre-Arnaud Alunni and scents from Azzi Glasser. Rooms are set across four floors, rising up from that stunning garden courtyard, with three luxury suites and a dramatic penthouse, decorated with white Veronese marble, on top. South American restaurant Yopo, outdoor terrace Jurema and eccentric cocktail bar Waeska complete the picture.
